How a shingle roof sheds water
Overlapping shingle courses direct water down the slope. Underlayment provides a secondary layer beneath them, while flashing carries water around valleys, walls, chimneys and pipes. A shingle cannot replace flashing at a roof-to-wall joint.
Installation needs to suit the slope and the specific product. Low-slope sections need particular attention to the covering and underlayment requirements. We assess the roof shape before extending a shingle choice onto an addition or porch.

Repairing or replacing shingles
Local replacement
A damaged shingle can be replaced when compatible material fits, adjacent shingles remain workable and the repair connects to sound deck and flashing. Color match and roof performance are different questions.
System replacement
A new roof opens the covering so the deck can be examined and deteriorated wood addressed. Edge protection, valleys, flashings and ventilation belong in that scope.
Impact-rated products
An impact classification describes a product’s performance in a stated test. It does not make the roof immune to hail, establish an insurer discount or settle whether a future event causes covered damage.
Appearance and performance are separate choices
Architectural shingles use laminated construction for a layered profile. Other shingle styles change the shape, weight and appearance. A sample shows color and texture; the installed roof also depends on ventilation, fastening, accessories and workmanship.
We explain the chosen material beside the roof details and budget. Manufacturer and installation warranties cover different issues and carry their own terms. The shingle options guide develops those distinctions.
